Vintage-Inspired Newspaper Costumes Are Black, White, Read All Over

For Amy M. Phillips and Fairlight Hubbard, the founders of talent agency Eye Management, the sight of the morning paper on a doorstep doesn't just conjure up visions of hot coffee, a steamy shower, and a desire to dive back under the covers. In the creative duo's latest photo spread,"Extra, Extra Paper Doll," Phillips and Hubbard unleash the hidden potential of common newsprint by refashioning it into glamorous, screen-siren-worthy ensembles. Modeled by Emily O'Daniel, the papery confections are instantly transformed, morphing from everyday reading material into the trappings of high fashion.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE

A newspaper bearing headlines about the economic slump is hardly the stuff of romance, but for Fairlight Hubbard and Amy M. Phillips, the power of the periodical extends far beyond its ability to inform. The creative twosome, who front Eye Management, a talent agency in Nashville, designed a series of vintage-inspired garments made completely from newspaper. Inspired by Hubbard’s own frugal upbringing—she began her artistic career using found materials like brown paper bags and leaves—“Extra, Extra Paper Doll” was executed by cutting, folding, and taping swathes of newsprint directly onto a model.

The clothes were made by cutting, folding, and taping swathes of newsprint directly onto a model.

At the close of the shoot, all the newspaper was gathered up and sent to a recycling plant, where they now await their second (or is that third?) coming.

Speedo, From Swimsuits Into Fabulous Frock

When FINA, the world governing body of aquatic sports, banned swimmers from competing in full-body swimsuits, Speedo was hung out to dry. Left with a surplus of the LZR Racer suit that catapulted Michael Phelps to his record-smashing victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the swimwear manufacturer sought the aid of another award-winner: From Somewhere, a British sustainable-fashion label that knows a thing or two about navigating textile waste.
The cocktail-length bustle dress, composed entirely of LZR Racer suits, will be auctioned off for charity.

BATHING BEAUTY

Announced at London Fashion Week’s Estethica showcase, the collaboration will include a limited-edition capsule collection, created from unsold and surplus Speedo stock, that is still in development. Designers Ursola de Castro and Filippo Ricci also unveiled an elegant cocktail-length bustle dress, composed entirely of LZR Racer suits, that will be auctioned off for charity.

“The Speedo LZR Racer suit has been a design icon in the sport of swimming since its launch in 2008,” says David Robinson, president of Speedo International. “During its time in the pool, swimmers wearing it have broken 91 world records and achieved outstanding results. The Speedo collaboration with From Somewhere now allows the LZR Racer to be a design icon outside of the pool.”
The complete From Somewhere With Speedo collection will be revealed in early 2011, with a portion of sales from the collection earmarked for charity.

Footprint Leaf T-Shirts Make Like a Tree

Next time you want to “leaf” a lasting impression on a date, why not follow artist Dave Rittinger’slead and wear a shirt made entirely from leaves? (Please don’t actually do this unless you never want to see the person again). Called “Leaf Series,” Rittinger’s colorful fashion line consists of five shirts, each crafted from the leaves of a different species of tree. The leaves were collected at Prospect Park in Brooklyn and glued on one by one to a self-made body-form. The result: An ensemble that is sure to be poplar, uh, popular with the ladies.

TAKE IT OR LEAF IT

“‘Leaf Series’ is an exercise in embracing and executing a prototypical garment that is of uncompromised ecological consciousness,” Rittinger tells Ecouterre. “I feel the work illustrates how beautiful and also unpractical extremes can sometimes be, as we often strive to be correct and righteous in our convictions, whether it be spiritual, political, or environmental.”
As you might have guessed, the rugged young man modeling the shirts is none other than Rittinger himself.
