ARTIFICIAL LINE by Toni Francesc
‘Artificial Life’, name of the Toni Francesc Fall 2010-2011 collection that showed at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, New York - and the show definitely lived up to its name.
A projected backdrop at the Bryant Park Salon of consisted of voltage pulses and the music beat in electronic robot tones. The industrial, technology message was clear immediately, and was re-emphasized as the first model robotically marched on the runway.
Inspiration:
..”a metaphor relating to Man and machine, offering a critical perspective of the future without overlooking the roots of the past and the world of the handcrafted creation.” ”The collection is based on an androgynous image, one in which Man and technology combine. All of Man’s failings are solved by means of mechanical objects, as if human beings themselves were forged out of a series of industrial materials.”
Textiles in the collection included cotton, viscose and silk. The colors were cool and icy, resembling ‘rusted metals and industrial elements’. This coloring was achieved through a ‘fading process’ specifically to give this industrial color scheme and texture. What I loved most about this is how clean the lines were, and how well each piece fully embodied the inspiration. Sharp points and shapes jutted out of the body and strong shoulders created a bold look for this season.
The ultimate moment for me though, would have been when Toni himself ecstatically ran down the entire length of the runway with an extreme sense pride. Having never seen a designer do much more than a bow or a quick wave, this was a pleasant surprise. People’s Revolution and Toni Francesc put on a great show – and really knew how to set the mood. I came out of the ‘Artificial Life’ show feeling inspired, a bit overwhelmed by the dramatic storyline, and ultimately satisfied.
